Called the Washington B-1 by the RAF it was never well-liked by the RAF. These bombers we not made for the RAF but rather were in-service USAF B-29s that were handed over to the RAF which received 87 of them.
To the RAF their B-29s were merely a stopgap until their own Canberra medium jet bombers were ready for operation but more importantly something to fill the gap until their “V” Force strategic bombers were operational These being the Valiant Victor and Vulcan bombers.
The Brits’ minds were on the future and besides, they chafed at using an American bomber as an interim until their V-bombers were ready. So no matter how good the B-29 (B-1) Superfortresses were, they knew they wouldn’t have them for very long anyway.
