The Red Baron's plane was shot down and destroyed in 1918. Pieces of the plane were taken by enemy soldiers as souvenirs. It must have been like a big race to get a piece of history!
Some say that, during the period of World War II, the German government preserved the other portion of the plane and put it in hideaway for safe preservation from the bombs. The parts were placed in different places.
One man said he saw the red wings and body of the plane in a dance hall! He even used the wings for firewood when it was very cold! One professor thinks this might explain how the Red Baron's plane was lost forever.
The Australian soldiers saved some parts of the airplane. Today you can see these parts in one of the museums in Australia. They have the stick that Red Baron used to fly and some pieces of red fabric from his aircraft, as well as a red cross from his own plane. Although probably most of the plane is gone, these small pieces remind me of the Red Baron and his fantastic story. They remind me of when very daring pilots fought in the skies.
